Artist networks are foundational to a region’s creative identity. With over fifty-five emerging and mid-career artists working in our resident studio spaces, Verge’s impact on the Sacramento art community cannot be overstated. This spring, Verge will present a survey of the artwork created by our studio artists in residence — with a twist. Each studio artist has been asked to select a companion piece by another artist to exhibit alongside their own work. The companion artworks have been created by friends, colleagues, collaborators, mentors, or other artists who have supported their own artistic practice. While some of the pairs of artwork show direct correlations between both artists’ creative outputs, the connections between other pairs are more difficult to trace. When all of these pairs of artwork are viewed together, the various ways artists find inspiration and meaning within their artistic community becomes apparent.
